There was so much hype over benefits starting on January 1st that many people assumed that if they didn’t sign up for health insurance by December 24, 2013 then it was too late.

If you thought that the healthcare reform bill required you to sign up by December 24, 2013, here is some good news – there is still time to sign up for health insurance and possibly get tax credits too!

The December 24, 2013 deadline was for people to have coverage starting January 1, 2014. The actual deadline for health insurance enrollment is March 31, 2014. March 31, 2014 is the last day for individuals to take part in ‘open enrollment’. Open enrollment is a set period of time when all insurance companies must accept applicants for their policies.

After March 31, 2014, if you have not enrolled and/or purchased health insurance or filed for an exemption, you may be subjected to a fine. The fine for 2014 is $95 per person with a family maximum of $285 or it can be 1% of your family’s income – whichever is higher.
